Sir Francis Chichester
Sir Francis Chichester originally qualified as a pilot after taking flying lessons at Brooklands, Surrey. He had a passion for sailing as well as flying and he gained significant sailing experience while working as a pilot in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserves during World War II. He first attempted solo journeys with his aircraft de Havilland Gipsy Moth while flying to New Zealand and hoped to break Bert Hinkler's record solo flight back to Australia on the way.
After ill health and a diagnosis of cancer, he took to long-distance yachting instead of flying. He would enter races and in 1960, he won the first Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race.
