Victoria Cross

In 1969 Payne was commanding the 212^th Company, when it was attacked by a Vietnam force near Ben Het Camp. Isolated and surrounded on three sides, shrapnel hit Payne, lodging in his skull, arms and hands. Under heavy fire, Payne organised a withdrawal & established a defensive perimeter. Disregarding his own wounds, he returned to the battlefield and spent three hours, frequently under fire, searching for remaining members of his unit. Payne located about 40 of his men, assisting some of the wounded himself and finding assistance for others.
