Ramsay MacDonald signed typed letter on official 10 Downing Street paper dated 1^st March 1935. Writing to Alderman Theobald ‘thank you most sincerely for coming to the meeting at Doncaster last Wednesday and for seconding the vote of thanks…...it is always an encouragement to me to know that the government commands the support of men with your progressive view’.

MacDonald became the first Labour Prime Minister in 1924, and served again in 1929 to 1931. He was as a pacifist who reduced military expenditure and his government was severely criticised for its ineffective response to the 1929 Great Depression. MacDonald was later expelled from the party and served his final term from 1931 to 1935 as Prime Minister of the National Government after securing the biggest electoral majority ever achieved.
