Henry Addington signed 1835 envelope
Henry Addington, 1st Viscount Sidmouth signed envelope front dated 5th November 1835 and addressed to Norwich.
Prime Minister from 1801 to 1804. During the early Napoleonic Wars Addington was criticised for his defensive conduct but with no allies Britain was isolated. He prioritised the strengthening of British defences through the building of Martello towers on the south coast. Despite the criticisms his domestic reforms doubled the efficiency of income tax, and Addington improved relations with Russia, Austria & Prussia which later formed the Third Coalition after he left office.
