King George VI Autograph | Military Appointment

King George VI signed ‘Appd. GR’, in the form of an autograph minute applied to a War Office document dated 8th March 1949. Stating in part ´That Your Majesty may be graciously pleased to approve the appointment of the under-mentioned officers, Royal Army Medical Corps, Territorial Army, as Honorary Physicians to Your Majesty´.

George VI was King of the United Kingdom, the Dominions of the British Commonwealth, the last Emperor of India, and the first Head of the Commonwealth. George VI reigned from 11th December 1936 to 6th February 1952). Known as 'Bertie' to his family and friends, George served in both the Royal Navy and RAF during the First World War, fighting in the Battle of Jutland in 1916 aboard HMS Collingwood. His reign witnessed the devastation of the Second World War & the subsequent collapse of the British Empire and its transformation into the Commonwealth.
