In 1941 he was serving with the 2nd New Zealand Division, deployed to Greece to prepare for an expected invasion by Axis troops. On the night of 28th/29th April 1941, a column of German armoured forces entered Kalamata; converging on a large force of Allied troops awaiting embarkation. When the order to retreat was given, Hinton instead charged the enemy with guns, grenades and bayonets, forcing them into retreat.
