Edward Heath signed 1992 Single Market cover
Edward Heath signed 1992 Single Market, European Arts Festival cover doubled with 1973 EEC stamps.
Edward Heath was Conservative Prime Minister from 1970 to 1974. In 1971, he introduced decimalisation and took the UK into the EEC in 1973. Heath tried to curb trade union power but his government was plagued by strikes. His decision to call a snap election in an attempt to win a mandate to take on the unions backfired after this resulted in a hung parliament. He was subsequently defeated by Margaret Thatcher in the Conservative leadership election.
