Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890–1969) was a five-star U.S. Army general who served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe during the Second World War, overseeing the D-Day landings in 1944 and the subsequent liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe. He was later elected the 34th President of the United States, serving two terms from 1953 to 1961. His presidency was marked by the end of the Korean War, the strengthening of NATO and navigating the tensions of the Cold War.
