On 20th April 1992 the world was gifted the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness and Wembley Stadium was the stage. Following Freddie’s untimely death in November 1991 from AIDS, the outpouring of grief across the globe led to the remaining members of Queen (John Deacon, Brian May and Roger Taylor) coming together with their manager, Jim Beach, to organise a memorial concert like no other; celebrating the life and legacy of Mercury, and to raise money for AIDS research and spread awareness about the disease. The plans for the concert were announced at the 1992 BRIT awards ceremony, and when the tickets for the concert went on sale, all 72,000 of them sold out in just three hours. The concert was set to be a huge success with the greatest performers from music and stage invited to pay tribute to the Queen frontman for one last time. The concert was broadcast live on television and radio to 76 countries around the world, with an audience of an estimated one billion. Following the moving and hugely successful Tribute Concert, the profits were used by Brian May, Roger Taylor and Jim Beach to set up The Mercury Phoenix Trust (MPT) in memory of the iconic frontman who died from this unforgiving disease the year before. The Trust is a core part of rock band Queen and Freddie’s legacy, with the passion and power behind the music forming the bedrock of the MPT. We’ll be working with the Trust for a second time, as we collaborate to produce the most epic 30th anniversary tribute concert cover, with £1 from each sale going to the trust.
