1908 Transatlantic Penny Post, Junior Society Cover
1st October 1908 First Penny Post to the USA with a London CDS. The Junior Philatelic Society published this envelope which marked the start of an important new service. It has a handwritten address to Pennsylvania and a 10th October arrival backstamp. £250 catalogue value.
The Junior Philatelic Society celebrated the introduction of the British American concessionary 1d rate with an envelope designed by Sydney R. Turner (1880-1972). In a tribute to Elihu Burritt, Turner included his name in a scroll at the lower right of the envelope. 6000 copies were printed with some 5000 carried aboard the RMS Lusitania from the United Kingdom to America - with only around 65 known recorded examples dated on the first day 1st October 1908. However, the elaborate envelope contravened the Post Office regulations & the plate was destroyed on 17th October 1908.
