HMS Devastation 150th Anniversary

HMS Devastation, 150^th anniversary of her launch. Featuring a £1 Machin and Portsmouth postmark (12^th July 2021).

HMS Devastation was the first of two Devastation-class built for the Royal Navy. This was the first class of ocean-going capital ships that did not carry sails, and the first in which the entire main armament was mounted on top of the hull rather than inside. She was launched in 1871, commissioned in 1873, and underwent two major refits during her service before being broken up in 1908.
