Philip Gardner VC signed 1998 Windsor Victoria Cross Exhibition cover.
In 1941 Gardner was acting captain in the 4th Royal Tank Regiment. During Operation Crusader, an attempt by the Allies to lift the Siege of Tobruk, Gardner was ordered to take two tanks to the rescue of two armoured cars. Despite coming under heavy fire, and being wounded, he managed to rescue a wounded man & return to the British lines.
