Wensleydale Railway 175th Anniversary

On 26 June 1846, an Act of Parliament authorised the Great North of England Railway and its successor the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway to build a line between Northallerton and Bedale. The 5½ mile (8.9 km) section between Northallerton and Leeming Lane opened on 6 March 1848 giving life to the 'Wensleydale Railway'.

Our 175th anniversary commemorative features a train on the Wensleydale Line, a Wallace & Gromit stamps (Wensleydale cheese Gromit!) and anniversary Northallerton postmark 6th March 2023.

The railway was built in stages by different railway companies and originally extended to Garsdale railway station on the Settle-Carlisle line. However, since 2003, the remaining line has been run as a heritage railway. The line runs 22 miles between Northallerton West station, and Redmire.
