Arthur Harris signed 1970 RAF Benson cover.
Arthur Harris (1892-1984) saw action in Africa and then on the Western Front with the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War. He was appointed head of Bomber Command in February 1942 during the height of the strategic bombing campaign, during which time he became known by the public as ‘Bomber’ Harris. He was tasked by Churchill to implement the ‘area bombing’ strategy of German cities and oversaw new tactics and technology to perform the policy.
