Since ascending the throne on 6 February 1952, Queen Elizabeth II has won the hearts of her people through her tireless service to her country, as her great-grandmother, Queen Victoria before her. Buckingham Palace calculate Victoria reigned for 23,226 days, 16 hours and 23 minutes. On 9th September 2015, Queen Elizabeth II will pass this significant milestone and become Britain’s longest reigning monarch.
During her reign, Her Majesty has always put her duty to her country and subjects first and foremost. She has travelled the world extensively. In 2011 she visited the Republic of Ireland, becoming the first British monarch to do so since Irish independence. She is steadfast in promoting the interests of Britain and The Commonwealth, and has faced every social and cultural change with great dignity and reverence. She has had 12 serving Prime Ministers including Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair and most recently, David Cameron. She has seen 6 Archbishops of Canterbury and 6 Roman Catholic Popes, two of whom visited the UK.
The Queen has become accustomed to countless milestones during her decades on the throne. She has commemorated 3 Jubilees the most recent being her Diamond Jubilee in 2012. Her Majesty has treasured nearly 70 years of marriage to HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, her ‘strength and stay’ throughout her reign. A matriarch of her family and the nation, in April 2016 she will celebrate another special occasion, her 90th birthday.
