It wasn't often we created a coin cover before 2007, but when we did, we went the whole hog!
2003 was a year of celebration. It marked the 50th anniversary of the first Ascent of Everest. It is hard these days to take in the sheer achievement of Sir Edmund Hillary and his comrades.
We know that to climb Everest is a huge undertaking and an incredible achievement. But 50+ years on, perhaps we forget the risk of the unknown that Sir Edmund faced. Scientists, leading scientists, assured him that he would die of lack of Oxygen when he reached the top. Imagine that! To be determined to climb this vast mountain, even knowing that you may draw your last breath even as you reach your goal.
The courage, skill and determination Sir Edmund showed through his life was a huge example. Despite that, he was always modest and eager not to claim all the glory.
We were proud to create a range of tribute covers for Sir Edmund in 2003. This coin cover is one fabulous example.
It celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Ascent of Everest and is double postmarked. The coin is a New Zealand crown coin from the very year of the conquest, 1953. Sir Edmund was of course a Kiwi and proud of it, so the New Zealand link is very relevant.
We need to let you know that the second stamp varies and you will get our choice. They are all fabulous!
