Great Ormond Street Hospital
The hospital grew from small beginnings. It opened it's doors on St Valentine's Day, February 14th 1852 with just ten beds. Today it has 340 beds and offers the widest range of paediatric specialists under one roof in the UK. More than 100 consultants, all experts in their fields, are supported by specially trained paediatric staff such as nrses, dieticians and play specialists. Children are referred to the hospital from all over the UK as well as from abroad.
While the day to day running of the hospital is paid for by the NHS, GOSH fundraising department aims to raise an extra £12 million each year to provide family support servies, buy the best in new equipment and help us to do even more research. One gift still benefiting the hospital today is that of JM Barrie who, in 1937, gave the rights of his famous play 'Peter Pan'.
