Macmillan or ‘Supermac’ was Conservative Prime Minister from 1957 to 1963. He pursued Keynesian economics which was credited with rising living standards, low unemployment, and steady growth, leading to him declare that Britain had ‘never had it so good’. However, his final years were affected by the Profumo affair and other scandals. On the world stage he rebuilt relations with the US after Suez and strengthened the UK nuclear arsenal with the purchase of Polaris.
