The Three Queens
When Queen Elizabeth 2 arrived in Liverpool to celebrate Cunard's 150th anniversary in July 1990 more than a million people of all ages lined the banks of the River Mersey to welcome the first Cunard Queen ever to visit the company's 'spiritual home'. The crowd certainly gave QE2 a warm, emotional and estatic welcome.
2015 sees the three largest Cunard ships ever built take pride of place in global celebrations to mark the milestone of Cunard's 175th anniversary.
In Liverpool similar scenes to those of 1990 are set to be witnessed again when, on the 25th May 2015, the Cunard fleet - Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria meet on the Mersey to salute the city and mark the 175th anniversary of the departure of Cunard's first ship, Britannia, as she inaugurated the first ever scheduled service across the Atlantic. That was a voyage that would change the face of ocean travel forever!
Liverpool, the birthplace of Cunard, will join New York, Southampton and Lisbon and become only the fourth port to host the current Cunard fleet at the same time.
The three ships will assemble in from of the world famous Three Graces at Liverpool's Pier Head which includes the Cunard Building - Head Office for the company from 1916 to 1967. Queen Mary 2 will then depart before Queen Elizabeth leaves later that day while Queen Victoria will remain overnight.
