The Stockton & Darlington Railway

The Stockton and Darlington Railway was opened on 27th September 1825 with the primary purpose of transporting coal from the collieries in the Shildon area to Stockton for shipment to national and international markets.

The Stockton and Darlington Railway marked a significant step in the development of the railways by bringing together for the first time the concept of a public railway for the transport of goods and passengers, and the use of steam locomotives. At the ceremonial opening ‘Locomotion No. 1’ was the first steam locomotive to transport passengers on a public railway.
