The London, Midland & Scottish Railway
The London, Midland & Scottish Railway was established in the 1923 grouping of the railways. The resulting company had numerous interests other than railway operations and was at one point the world’s largest transport organisation as well as the largest single commercial undertaking in the British Empire. It also held the title of the UK’s second largest employer, and the only member of the “Big Four” to operate in all parts of the British Isles.
In 1932 it received a new Chief Mechanical Engineer William Stanier. He was charged with introducing modern and more powerful locomotive designs. In 1937 the streamlined Coronation Scot was introduced and his highly successful Class 5 locomotive were so successful they later formed the basis for a standard British Railways design. He was knighted on 9 February 1943 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in March 1944, on his retirement, the only railway engineer other than George Stephenson to receive the honour.
Despite having widespread interests in a number of commercial areas, the LMS was first and foremost a railway organisation. It operated in all four constituent countries of the United Kingdom, and in England its operations penetrated 32 of the 40 counties. The company operated around 7,000 route miles of railway line, servicing 2,944 goods depots and 2,588 passenger stations, using 291,490 freight vehicles, 20,276 passenger vehicles and 9,914 locomotives. The company directly employed 263,000 staff, and through its annual coal consumption of over six and a half million tons, could claim to indirectly employ a further 26,500 coal miners.
