Every 10 years, London hosts an international stamp exhibition, but 2010 is different. The London 2010 Festival of Stamps is a year long celebration of stamps, stamp design and postal heritage. To mark the International Exhibition, held in May 2010 in London, Royal Mail are issuing a staggering variety of stamps.
This is the official London 2010 Festival of Stamps miniature sheet, issued on 8th May 2010, the first day of the International Exhibition. The stamps reproduced within the miniature sheet are probably the most popular stamps of all time. To the left, you can see the Empire Exhibition stamps and to the right, the famous Sea Horses stamps.
The Penny Black
The Penny Black ws the first stamp in the world and as people received mail, they soon noticed that there were different printing plates and so a hobby began. Many Victorians collected stamps by stringing them on to a thread, which is why many Penny Blacks have a small hold in them. As the hobby developed, much helped by an early stamp dealer, Stanley Gibbons, perfection became the target.
London plays host to The International Stamp Exhibition once every ten years when some of the world's most famous dealers and collectors come to enjoy the amazine variety of exhibits including some of Her Majesty the Queen's collection.
