Issue Date: 23/03/2010
Issue Name: House of Stewart - Mary, Queen of Scots
Producer: Buckingham Covers
The fourth cover in our Kings and Queen series sees us pay tribute to Mary, Queen of Scots and the ultimately doomed House of Stewarts. The painting featuring on our cover is by Giovanni Fattori, Italian artist and leaders of the group known as the Macchiaioli. The painting shows Mary standing over the dead body of a Knight after her defeat at the hands of her Protestant half-brother James Stewart. The defeat was arguably one of the bleakest of her career, and forced her to abdicate in favour of her infant son James VI.
These covers come with our choice of postmark (23rd March, 2010), and a limited number of these covers were genuinely signed by British actress Barbara Flynn.
Mary, Queen of Scots
Botn at Linlithgow Palace on 8th December 1542, Mary became Queen of Scots when she was six days old. As Henry VII of England's great grandaughter, Mary was next in line to the English throne, after Henry VIII's children. To make peace with England, she was bethroved to Henry VIII's son, the future Edward VI, but Catholics opposed to the plan took the young Mary to Stirling Castle and broke the match, preferring to return to Scotland's traditional alliance with France.
