Producer: Buckingham Covers

70 years ago, the forerunner of our national fire service started. Fire was a more real threat for British people than perhaps at any other time. Air raids during the Second World War meant more fires than the small fire brigades run locally could cope with alone. That's why the Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS) was formed. Within a few years it became the National Fire Service that we know today.

We are proud to commemorate the 70th anniversary with this lovely cover, produced with the The Firefighters Memorial Trust and the Worshipful Company of Firefighters. It features the full set of Fire Service stamps along with an AFS London EC1 postmark, and is available signed by Gerald Clarkson CBE or Bill Pertwee MBE.

The Firefighters Memorial Trust

The Firefighters Charity was established in 1990 and the Trust negotiated a site to the south of St Paul's Cathedral where a suitable memorial could be placed. It is at the top of the new City Walkway which is also approachable from the south bank of the Thames via the new Millenium Pedestrian Bridge.

The National Memorial to the men and women of the United Kingdom Fire Service, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of the realm in World War II, is the 'Blitz' Memorial Statue. It also commemorate sthe firefighters of the Auxilliary Fire Service, which came into action 70 years ago at the beinning of the second World War. The very moving sculpture in bronze is by John Mills and was commissioned by the Founder Master of the Worshipful Company of Firefighters.
