We've been using them for 200 years, they come in all shapes and sizes and, depending on where in the world you are, they can be either red, yellow, blue, green, orange or white! Some are pretty plain, whilst others can be quite ornate and people travel all over the country to take pictures of them! What else could we possibly be referring to other than the humble Post Box of course, which is the focus of Royal Mail's August 2009 issue.

Naturally, we've created our own First Day Cover featuring the stamps issued in 2009 and we're very pleased to announce that our cover is the official Bath Postal Museum first day cover for this issue! This delightful cover features the miniature sheet and is cancelled with our official Bath Postal Museum postmark in Bath on the day. It is available signed by Lord Bath.

Bath Postal Mueum

Since 2006, the Bath Postal Museum has been in it's new home, beneath the City of Bath Post Office. It is an exciting and educational day out for all the family.

Once past the entrance, through a rescued 1930's post office in Green Street, you will be transported to a new world where, just by touching a portrait, you will be able to find out all about the two Bathorians, Ralph Allen and John Palmer, who revolutionised postal communiications in the 18th century. Children can try on 18th century clothes and really seem to be back in time.

In the Victorian post office talking heads tell you all about the glory days of the post. If you lift the receiver of the old style phone, you can hear stories from retired postmen and the touch of a button lets you listen to all the various tunes played by the guard on his post horn.

There are interactive games to play to help you learn about the development of written communications and there is a film on the history of writing, with a commentary by Richard Briers. You can perforate a real sheet of Cinderella stamps, and you discover for yourself just how hazardous the lives of those delivering the mail in olden days could be.
