The National Trust - Neptune Coastline Campaign

Enterprise Neptune was set up in 1965 with three main areas of interest: to alert people to the pressures facing the undeveloped coast: to acquire and own unspoilt coastline for permanent preservation and public acces: to raise money for new coastal purchases, their endowment and immediate repair. Wen the National Trust takes on a length of coastline, it tries to protect the whole landscape, which forms the backdrop to the seashore. This usually involves buying the hinterland, sometimes as far as inland as the skyline. Important coastline protected by the National Trust includes Robin Hood's Bay on the North Yorkshire coast, sections of the White Cliffs of Dover and Lizard Point and St Michael's Mount in Cornwall.

The trust protects more than 40% of the Cornish coast and over 138 miles of the Welsh coast. Today it is not ust unspoilt coastline that is being acquired but also areas such as the coal blackened Durham coast, where there is an opportunity to return the despoiled land to some of its former glory.
