Issue Name: End of an Era Concorde & QE2 Coin Cover
Producer: Buckingham Covers
As commemorative covers go, this one doesn’t get more poignant. This fabulous cover marks a true end of an era for two of Britain’s best known and much-loved icons, Concorde and the QE2. Both have captured the nation’s hearts over the years and it’s only fitting that we salute them both with our own tribute.
The cover, which was carried on the QE2, features a 1969 shilling coin and a genuine vintage stamp from the same year, with a special cachet. It also includes two new stamps and labels taken from our QE2 and Concorde sheets and was double-postmarked on 11th November, the day the QE2 left Southampton for the very last time and 26th November, the anniversary date of Concorde’s final flight back to Filton.
We are delighted to be able to offer this cover signed by Captain of the QE2, Ian McNaught, or double-signed by Captain Ian McNaught and Concorde Captain Mike Bannister who captained the final flight.
The End of an Era
This year we say goodbye to the QE2, one of the best loved British ships. Her maiden voyages were in 1969, the same year in which Concorde flew for the first time. It was a time of great hope and rebuilding after the hardships in the aftermath of the second world war and these two great achievements in design and engineering became British icons of the twentieth century.
