Nearly every child has grown up with Rudyard Kipling's classics, The Jungle Book and the Just So Stories. Generations of us were tucked into bed and given his imaginative, crazily improbable explanations of the world around us, such as how the elephant got his trunk.

These gorgeous stamps capture each Just So story and we worked with the National Trust to produce a cover showing Kipling's much-loved Sussex home, Bateman's, where he did much of his writing.

Bateman's - Home of Rudyard Kipling

Rudyard Kipling was the first British winner of the Nobel Prize for literature. He wrote prolifically and his early work captured the era of the British Empire. He understood, as so few people did in his time, the equality of peoples. When he became a mason, he wrote 'I was entered by a Hindu, passed by a Mohammedan and raised by an Englishman. Our Tyler was a Jew'.He was the most famous writer in the English speaking world and his work bridged all classes and races. Because his apeal was so widespread, he was one of the most popular Victorian writers and was offered a knighthood which he refused. To this day most children know his stories of the Jungle Book and the Just So Stories.

Kipling was 36 years old when he and his wife returned to England. They wanted somewhere to settle and after a considerable search, they found Bateman's, deep in the Sussex countryside.
