Issue Name: 90th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force Coin Cover
Producer: Buckingham Covers
The Royal Air Force, founded on 1st April 1918, was the world's largest air force with over 5,000 aircraft, and also the first ever independent air force. 90 years on, we celebrate the RAF and all that we owe to those brave men and women who have served in it, with this luxury official RAF coin cover.
It holds an official RAF coin, created Tower Mint. This stunning coin shows 3 generations of RAF planes on the front. It has been signed by a history-making lady! We are thrilled to be able to offer an historic signature on an historic cover - the first woman to be awarded the DFC, Flight Lieutenant Michelle Goodman DFC.
The cover features the breathtaking artwork of Frank Wootton. The painting is called April Morning, 1918. The RAF was officially formed on 1st April 1918 so you couldn't get anything more perfect!
Postmarked at the RAF's "Spiritual Home"The British stamp is from our own exclusive RAF stamp sheet, postmarked at what many believe is the RAF's spiritual home: Cranwell.
The history of military aviation at Cranwell goes back to November 1915 when the Admiralty requisitioned 2500 acres of land from the Earl of Bristol's estate. When the RAF was formed in 1918, i"RAF Cranwell&quo; became the entry point for all permanent officers in the RAF. Today, Cranwell is home to the Royal Air Force College, the RAF equivalent of Sandhurst.
Doubled in Gibraltar. The cover also bears a fabulous aviation stamp from Gibraltar and each was flown over there to get their anniversary postmark as well. That means each cover is double postmarked.
The 90th Anniversary of the RAF
"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few" Winston Churchill
The RAF was the world's oldest air force of significant size to become independent of Army or Navy control. It was founded on 1st April 1918 during World War I after Prime Minister Lloyd George asked General Jan Smuts to look into the air defence problems of the country at the time. The Royal Air Force was born of the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Navy Air Service.

Flight Lieutenant Michelle Jayne Goodman DFC is a retired Royal Air Force officer. She was the first woman to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, for her actions while serving in Iraq, and the first female officer to be awarded any British combat gallantry medal.
Martin Withers was a Flight Lieutenant at the time of Black Buck 1, the first of seven Vulcan bomber missions which effectively marked the beginning of the conflict. The 16-hour flight from Ascension Island to Port Stanley and back on April 30 and May 1, 1982 was also the longest non-stop bombing mission in history.
John Reeve joined the RAF in 1965 and after pilot training at Cranwell completed two tours on the Vulcan, first at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire and then at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus.
