Celebrating Northern Ireland
St Patrick was a Christian missionary and was born in Roman Britain. When he was about sixteen he was captured by raiders and taken as a slave to Ireland, where he remained for six years before escaping back to his family. He went on to enter the Church, as his father and grandfather had done before him, becoming a Deacon and a Bishop. He later returned as a missionary, working in the north and west of the island, although there is little known about the places where he actually worked. He taught a lesson of the Trinity to Ireland, although little is known about the places he actually worked. He taught a lesson of the Trinity to Ireland by using the three leafed shamrock plant. Folklore has it that Saint Patrick stood upon a hilltop and cast all the snakes out of Ireland; it is said, that the red marks on the leaves of the shamrock are drops of St Patrick's blood, which keep the snakes away.
