Richard III

Richard III was the last of the Plantagenet Kings of England. He reigned for only two years, 1483 - 1485, but showed himself to be a conscientious King, concerned to provide for the well being of his people, promoting education, adminstering the law with justice, and encouraging industry, towns and trade. He loved books and encouraged the study and writing of history.

Richard died at the battle of Bosworth, fighting against the pretender, Henry Tudor. Richard's reputation was thereby deliberately maligned, culminating in the famous play bearing his name by William Shakespeare.
