Producer: Buckingham Covers
Royal Mail's first stamp set in their Kings and Queens series focused on the War of the Roses. Buckingham Covers teamed up with the Richard III Society to commemorate the last Yorkist King of England, and produced this official Richard III Society FDC. Featuring the first Kings and Queens Royal Mail stamps and a Richard III, York postmark, it is available signed by by Sir Ian McKellen, or the Duke of Gloucester.
Richard III was the last of the Plantagenet Kings of England. He reigned for only two years, 1483 - 1485, but showed himself to be a conscientious King, concerned to provide for the well being of his people, promoting education, adminstering the law with justice, and encouraging industry, towns and trade. He loved books and encouraged the study and writing of history.
Richard died at the battle of Bosworth, fighting against the pretender, Henry Tudor. Richard's reputation was thereby deliberately maligned, culminating in the famous play bearing his name by William Shakespeare.
