When Royal Mail announced a set of stamps celebrating the British seaside, we instantly thought ... Blackpool! The Las Vegas of the North is celebrated on our stunning cover. If you, like us, were addicted to BBC's Blackpool or Viva Blackpool tv shows you will realise why David Morrissey agreed to sign a limited number of covers for us.
Tourism came to Blackpool via the new railway which reached there in 1846. The town became the playground of the northern industrial workers, and the tourism capital of the north.
Blackpool has no less than three piers. The North (built 1863), Central (1868), and the Souh (1893). The world famous Blackpool Tower was built in May 1894 and is a 518ft copy of the Eiffel Tower.
The internationally famous Blackpool illuminations switch on in September and October, extending the season by a couple of months. A series of lighted displays and collages arranged along the entire length of the sea front. The attraction started in 1879 when the sight of so much light at night was a marvel, but it has continued to attract millions of visitors ever since.
