St George - Patron Saint of England

Near the town of Silene in Libya, there lived a dragon. Th people were terrified of him so they tethered an animal outside the town gates for him each day, until they had no more. Then, in ultimate desperation, the King's daughter, young Princess Cleolinda was selected to be the sacrifice. St George rode up on his white charger, dismounted and fought thye monster on foot. As it was dying, he dragged it into the city, and slew it in front of the people. The King offered him a bag of gold as a reward for saving his daughter. This he refused and asked that it be given to the poor. The story is a powerful allegory, emblamatic of the triumph of good over evil.
