The Falklands War was a 10-week undeclared war between Argentina and the United Kingdom in 1982 over two British dependent territories in the South Atlantic: the Falkland Islands and its territorial dependency, the South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
The third cover in our Falklands 25th Anniversary Collection. It features a 1st class stamp and label from our Falklands Island stamp sheet along with a Portsmouth postmark (2nd April, 2007), and is available signed by Sir Rex Hunt, or double signed by Sir Rex Hunt and Admiral Sir John Sandy Woodward, or triple signed by Sir Rex Hunt, Major General N F Vaux and Captain W R Canning.
By the 1st April it became clear the invasion of the Falkland Islands by Argentina was probable. Rex Hunt, the Govenor, called a conference before going to the local radio station to warn the people to expect an invasion during the night or the next day. Major Mike Norman RM was given overall command of the Marines due to his seniority, while Major Gary Noott RM became the military advisor to Govenor Hunt. The total strength was 68 marines and 11 sailors, which was greater than would normally have been available, because the garrison was in the process of changing over.
In Britain an emergency cabinet meeting approved the sending of the task force to liberate the Islands and MPs were recalled for a special Saturday sitting of the House of Commons.
Sir Rex Masterman Hunt, CMG was an English British Government diplomat and colonial administrator. He was Governor, Commander-in-Chief, and Vice Admiral of the Falkland Islands between 1980 and September 1985.
Admiral Sir John Forster "Sandy" Woodward GBE, KCB was a British admiral who commanded the British Naval Task Force in the South Atlantic during the Falklands War.
