These stamps were issued to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the National Portrait Gallery (NPG). We are proud to have been chosen to produce the official NPG cover. Dame Judi Dench, Britain's most celebrated actress has a starring role on this cover. The artwork is from her portrait as it hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. Dame Judi has very generously agreed to sign to raise funds both for the Gallery and her favourite charity, the Chicken Shed. To have her genuine signature on this tribute cover makes an instant impact. You'll be proud to own it.

The National Portrait Gallery

The National Portrait Gallery was formally established on 2nd December 1856, with the criteria that the Gallery was to be about the people who have made a significant contribution to British history and culture, rather than the quality or character of a particular image. This criterion is still used by the Gallery today, when deciding which works enter the National Portrait Gallery's Collection.

The Collection had several homes before finally settling at its present site on the corner of Charing Cross Road, where both the building and the Collection has ben enhanced over the years.

The National Portrait Gallery, recognising the need for showing the Collection outside London, has developed a number of ways of sharing the works with regional audiences and has been at the forefront of such developments within the museum community.
