Queen Elizabeth II
Queen Elizabeth II is 80 this year. She has reigned since she was just twenty seven years old. She bought with her a new spirit of hope after the trials of two world wars. Her Coronation was broadcast on television and for the first time people all round the world could share in the excitement of the great occasion as it happened. She has reigned through a period of great social and political change. She has always made the Royal Family accessible to her people. As a young princess, she joined the army during the war and did her bit and she has been working for her country ever since. She is a highly respected and admired monarch.
Windsor Castle is an official residence of The Queen and the largest occupied castle in the world. It has been a royal home and fortress for over 900 years. During the first world war, King George V changed the family name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to the House of Windsor.
The castle remains a working palace today. It is still the home of the royal family, but visitors are admitted to see some of the treasures housed there such as the Drawings Gallery, Queen Mary's doll's house, and the fourteenth-century of St Geroge's Chapel, the burial place of ten sovereigns and setting for many royal weddings.
