Ask anyone what the name Ascot conjures up and I bet that most people will say 'hats' before 'horses'! Whilst there's no denying that the racing is always a thrill, it's the hats that are the talking point at the end of the day.
Our Fabulous Hats cover features a great painting by David Trundley, which captures Ladies Day at Royal Ascot perfectly - a sea of glorious hats! With both Lester Piggott and Willie Carson signing, this cover was a clear winner.
The Royal Ascot meeting was first run during the reign of Queen Anne in 1711. It is renowned as an international occasion of tradition and style. It lasts four days each June and is traditionally attended by the British sovereign. The Royal Procession, when the Royal Party enter the racecourse at the Golden Gates and drive up the course, takes place at 2pm on each of the four days. The principle event is the Ascot Gold Cup, established in 1807 and run over 4km by horses more than three years old. Ladies Day is the day for high fashion statements and for the ladies to vie for the most beautiful or outrageous hat. The galloping right hand track at Ascot provides an ideal test for thoroughbreds. Prize money for major races is amongst the best in the world which brings competitors from all over the world. There is nothing to quite match the excitement of top class racing with the world's best thoroughbreds combined with the glamour of high fashion.
