Issue Date: 15/05/2001
Issue Name: 150th Anniversary of the First Double Decker Bus Miniature Sheet Cover
Producer: Buckingham Covers
Our red double-decker buses have become a British institution and this cover, produced for BUSES Magazine, features the huge and very striking Buses miniature sheet. The cover design celebrates The Routemaster, the last bus to be wholly designed by London Transport. Ex Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, the man who introduced the London Congestion Charge to encourage us to stop driving and use buses, very kindly agreed to sign some of these covers for us.
The Routemaster Bus
The Routemaster was the last bus to be wholly designed by London Transport. The first examples of this design were to complete the replacement of the once large London Trolleybus fleet. It was the last open platform bus to enter service in London and was designed for a 17 year life. It first appeared in 1954 just under 1000 examples of this popular and famous London bus remain in the British Isles out of the 2876 built in total and over 600 of these are still in operation in the capital alone.
By using a light alloy body, it was possible to produce a 64 seat bus only fractionally longer and wider than the oder 56 seat RT bus. The RM also differed from earlier London designes in being of integral construction. Instead of having a traditional body and chassis, the Routemaster has a strengthened body to take the stress. The mechanical units are mounted on front and rear sub frames rather than on a fixed chasis. Other novel features for a bus of the 1950, but fitted as standard to the Routemaster were independant front suspension, power steering, fully automatic gearbox and power hydraulic braking.
BUSES, first published in 1949, is the best selling UK bus and coach magazine. Read by professionals and enthusiasts, it is published monthly and each issue contains features and news about vehiles, operators and bus and coach operation in the British Isles and around the world.
