British Auto Legend
John Paul "Johnny" Herbert (born 25th June 1964 in Brentwood, Essex, England) was widely regarded as an up and coming man of motor racing during the 1980s. Winning the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch in 1985, Herbert caught Eddie Jordan's attention, and together they won the 1987 British Formula Three title. Disaster struck in 1988, Herbert was caught up in a major accident at Brands Hatch, badly breaking his legs in a fearsome impact with the barriers. He was back in a racing car at the beginning of 1989, despite the fact that he could barely walk. Even more remarkably, he was now in Formula 1, scoring points on his debut at the Brazilian Grand Prix driving for the Benetton team.
After driving for Tyrrell and Lotus in 1991 he joined Mazda's sportscar lineup and took victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours. After 3 years of frustration, Herbert left Lotus in mid 1994, joining Ligier and then Benetton in search of success. Although he failed to score any points in 1994, he was retained as Michael Schumacher's team mate for 1995 where he took his first Formula 1 victory at the 1995 British Grand Prix and won again at Monza.
After being dropped by Benetton, Herbert drove for Swiss outfit Sauber in 1996-1998, achieving two podium places. Moving to Stewart he won his final Grand Prix in 1999 at the European Grand Prix.
Between 2004-2007 Herbert entered the Le Mans Series Championships coming 1st in 2004 at the wheel of an Audi R8.
Currently Herbert is a regular contributor to post race analysis and often appears on dedicated Formula 1 programmes.
