Wells Cathedral

Behind Wells Cathedral there are five springs, five holy wells which gave the city it's name. It is likely that this has always been a sacred site and for 1300 years Christians have worshipped here. The Cathedral we see now began in 1180. It was built in the newest style of the time with pointed instead of rounded arches and ribbed ceiling vaults. It is the earliest example of the Gothic style we have in England. It is highly decorated with fine ston carvings showing scenes of medieval life.
