Post & Go British Lakes - A Short History
There is a trick question which goes "How many Lakes are there in the Lake District?" Some will answer 16 or 17, but the "correct" answer is just one, Bassenthwaite Lake, because all the other are waters, meres or tarns. The Lake District forms the largest National Park in England and although it is one of the most popular holiday centres in Britain, it also provides great habitats for wildlife and plants.
From fish to underwater plants, birds to otters, the lakes are a nationally important place for wildlife. It is home to wintering birds like goldeneye and tufted duck, there is a wide range of large aquatic and under water plants such as six-stamened waterwort, water lobelia, white water lily and pondweed. There is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in Low Wray Bay on Windermere where undisturbed sediments provide a record of changes over the last 20 000 years.
Soft shores and stony shores provide the right conditions for a huge range of plant communities from underwater plants, to reedy fringes, to wet woodland to dry oak woods.
