Issue Name: The Weather - Sheffield Park Garden Stamps Cover
Producer: Buckingham Covers
Sheffield Park Gardens suffered enormous damage from the great hurricane of 1987. The National Trust decided to rebuild it in 2001 - the same year that these Weather stamps were issued. We thought it was a great idea to use this cover to raise money for the Sheffield Park Hurricane Rescue Fund. It is available signed by weatherman, Michael Fish MBE, or gardener Charlie Dimmock.
The National Trust
The National Trust has launched a one year public appeal to raise £250,00 for its ambitious Planting for the Future scheme at Sheffield Park Garden in East Sussex. The Trust is to repair damage cuased during the great storms of the late 1980s and early 1990s, whilst recognising the effect climate change might have on planting in future.
During the Great Storms of 1987 and 1990, more than 2000 trees and plants were blown down or crushed at Sheffield Park Garden. These losses, together with unexpected changes in the climate, have had a significant inpact on the garden's structure, which the Trust has been monitoring. Further decline can be expected at Sheffield Park, unless action is taken now to reinstate the protective canopy of trees and shrubs - many of which are grown for their spectacular autumn foilage.
During 2001, the National Trust's Year of the Garden, the Trust aims to raise the £250,000 it needs to pay and care for 9,000 trees to be planted over the next five years.
Visitors will be able to witness vital conservation in action at Sheffield Park Garden, and there will be opportunities for people to get involved and support the appeal.
