Issue Name: London Host City: 2012 Olympics
Producer: Buckingham Covers
A triumph really worth celebrating. To mark London's successful bid to host the Olympic Games in 2012, Royal Mail fast tracked this special miniature sheet. It was a very late-notice addition to the stamp calender! Each cover features the stamps torn from the miniature sheet and each one holds a GENUINE 1948 Olympics stamp. Every city to have hosted the modern Olympics is listed, by year, in gold blocking and it is available signed by Sally Gunnell OBE.
The Olympic Games
There were originally 9 cities bidding to host the 2012 Olympics before the International Olympic Committee, as a result of a scored technical evaluation, reduced the number of cities to five: London, Madrid, Moscow, New York City and Paris. Throughout the process, Paris, after trying for thre times, was widely seen as the favourite to win the nomination with London a close second.
On 6th July 2005, the final selection was announced at the Raffles City Convention in Singapore, where the 117th IOC Session was held. Moscow was the first city to be elimated, followed by New York and Madrid. The final two cities left in contention were London and Paris. At the end of the fourth round of voting, London won the right to host the 2012 Games with 54 votes, defeating Paris's 50.
