HM Bark Endeavour
On the 26th August Lieutenant James Cook set sail from England on HMS Endeavour on a voyage that was to make him famous, claiming both New Zealand and Australia for Britain. On board was a team of scientists led by Joseph Banks and the artist Sydney Parkinson. It was these people who introduced the world to Australia's amazine flora and fauna. In April 1770 Endeavour landed at Botany Bay.
In November 2004 HM Bark Endeavour set sail again to Australia arriving in April 2005 at Botany Bay (Sydney) again. By coincidence the joint Great Britian Australia stamp issue is on the 21st April.
