The National Trust
This tranquil paradise, designed by Henry Hoare II, features classical temples, a grotto and a unique collection of rare trees and plants, all set around a magnificient lake. Sitting majestically above the garden, surrounded by beautiful lawns and parkland, is Stourhead House, a fine Palladian mansion built in the 1720s. The house contains a wealth of art treasures, paintings and furniture by Chippendale the Younger. There are beautiful walks on the wider estate and a fascinating folly, King Alfred's Tower, with spectacular views across three counties. Gardens open daily throughout the year from 9am.
