Issue Name: Woodland Animals - Brownsea Island Red Squirrel
Producer: Buckingham Covers
This favourite cover raised money for Brownsea Island, home of many red squirrels. It has 5 adorable stamps from the well-loved Woodland Animals set. We have a soft spot for the mole (middle stamp, top row!). It has our official National Trust Brownsea Island postmark and is available signed by David Bellamy OBE, Stefanie Powers or Jenny Seagrove.
Over the centuries Brownsea Island has had a remarkable varied history - military stronghold, industrial site, Edwardian country estate and refuge for wildlife. It has been prillaged by vikings and blitzed in WW2. In the 19th century a large community, which had its own school and brass band grew p to support a pottery industry. The last private owner let the island return to nature. Since 1962 the island has been owned and managed by The National Trust. Part of the island forms a Dorset Wildlife Trust nature reserve.
Red squirrels, absent from most of southern England are residen on Brownsea. Numbers fluctuate but there are about 200 at present. They can be difficult to spot especially during the summer months although they can be seen in all the wooded areas, especially in early morning and evening. The Brownsea squirrels rely heavily on the pine trees as their major food source and pinecones stripped of their nuts are a clue that there are squirrels in the area. A major project is under way to encourage the pine woodland to regenerate to secure the future of this endangered species.
