The Olympic Games Opening Ceremony

The London 2012 Olympic Games comprises 26 sports taking place in 34 venues across the UK. 10,490 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees will be competing in 302 medal events across 19 thrilling days of competition, with 8.8 million tickets available. 2,961 technical officials and 5,770 team officials will also be involved, along with 21,000 members of the media and broadcasters.

It may be called "London 2012", but from Sailing in Weymouth to Football in Glasgow, the Olympic Games is a nationwide event. The whole of the United Kingdom's swept into the excitement.

Lord Coe and the Organising Committee have worked to ensure that these Games will leave a lasting legacy to the British people. The physical legacy of the London 2012 Games is clearly visible in London's magnificient new Olympic Park and the new tranformation of east London. But we will see these benefits for years to come in the inspiration of a new generation, the new initiatives and programmes coming out of the games.

And London 2012 will also, of course give memories to all of us, 64 years since Great Britain last hosted the Games in 1948. 14 million people across the UK have participated in a cultural Olympiad event, over 8 million people have tickets to watch and many more will be watching at home.
