Queen Victoria

Born at Kensington Palace on 24th May 1819, Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria) was the only daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Kent. When she was born she was fifth in line to the throne, after her Father and his three brothers. Her father died shortly after her birth. Her Uncle, George IV reigned for ten years  but died in 1830 with no surviving children, his brother Frederick had died three years earlier and so her uncle, William IV, became King. He was old and unwell and, having no legitimate children, Victoria became heir to the throne.

Victoria was raised in a strict, secluded environment. King William disliked her mother, the Duchess of Kent, and was determined that she should not become Regent on behalf of Victoria. Despite his failing health he lived to see Victoria’s eighteenth birthday, and just twenty seven days later, on 20th June 1837, he died and Victoria became Queen.

Prince Albert

Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was born on 26th August 1819 in Coburg. He was Victoria’s first cousin (the son of her Mother’s brother).

The pair first met in 1836, when Albert travelled to London for Princess Victoria’s 17th birthday. In the years that followed, Albert wrote to Victoria many times. He visited in the autumn of 1839 and, five days after his arrival at Windsor, Victoria proposed, as custom dictated. Victoria’s intention to marry was declared formally to the Privy Council on 23rd November, and they married on 10th February 1840 at the Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace.
