150th Anniversary of The Opening of the District Line
To mark the 150th anniversary of the Opening of the District Line, the London Transport Museum organised for steam trains to run along the line between Ealing Broadway and High Street Kensington over the anniversary weekend.
The service is expected to be the final time that steam trains will travel into Central London on the Underground due to signalling modernisation that will provide more frequent services and improve reliability for customers on the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines from 2021. The planned celebrations for the day are Victorian dress and live music of the era including heritage Victorian brass instruments all adding to the fantastic atmosphere as rail enthusiasts soak up everything there is to offer ahead of their journey.
The train is to comprise of the following locomotives and carriages:
Metropolitan No.1 steam locomotive, hauling Bluebell Chesham Coaches, 387, 412, 368 & 394, the District Railway Coach No.100 from the Kent and East Sussex Railway — and in first class, the London Transport Museum’s Metropolitan Jubilee Coach 353
At the back the restored electric locomotive, ‘Sarah Siddons’ hauling carriages towards High Street Kensington.
