On the 14th April 2019 the 1000th Grand Prix is due to take place in China. Our cover celebrates this occasion with a stunning painting of the Monaco Grand Prix in 1950 by Benjamin Freudenthal. It features a stamp from the 2007 Grand Prix Racing Cars issue along with a Silverstone postmark (14th April, 2019).
The Grand Prix
Formula 1 is the pinnacle of Motorsport and on 14th April 2019, the Chinese Grand Prix, Shanghai will host the milestone 1,000th Grand Prix race. The total includes some early ‘Indianapolis 500’ races which were a part of the World Championships from 1950 until 1960 despite not being officially named as a ‘Grand Prix’, but are widely accepted within the total.
It was originally hoped that F1 bosses would name Silverstone as the host for the 1,000th Grand Prix, however, with the race calendar meaning the 1,000th race will be in April, it was decided that due to “sub-optimal” British weather, Formula One chiefs would not move Silverstone’s summer position on the calendar.
Silverstone is part of the fabric of F1 and held the very first World Championship Formula One race, to have held the 1,000th would have been a much deserved reward for its place in F1 history but celebrations are in place to mark Silverstone’s 70th race and F1’s 1,007th, a race weekend to remember for the British fans!
